Meet Dr. Jeff Henry

I first became a chiropractic patient as a teenager.”

I thought it was kind of strange and was a little afraid at first. I didn’t understand how moving my spine could have such dramatically positive effects on the rest of my health.

I was diagnosed with scoliosis as a young teenager, and was soon amazed and relieved at what a difference chiropractic care made in my life. This saved me from years of wearing a rigid spinal brace called a Milwaukee brace or having to undergo dangerous spinal surgery. I also injured my back in high school wrestling, and was in more pain than I had ever experienced. Just trying to put on shoes and socks was so painful it nearly made me vomit. That’s when I was blessed to meet Dr. Dahlgaard, D.C. He adjusted me and showed me some things I could do at home to help me recover. He also taught me about how the nervous system controls and directs the function of every cell in my body. As a young science nerd, this was music to my ears. I was amazed at how I not only recovered from severe low back pain, but was much healthier overall. I no longer got the “common” cold, which often developed into bronchitis three or four times a year, for example.

A Chiropractic Education

Dr. Dahlgaard encouraged me to become a Doctor of Chiropractic, but I was convinced I wanted to be a Doctor of Medicine instead. I went through the pre-med curriculum at Iowa State University, and was ready to attend the University of Iowa Medical School. I decided, however, to first spend two years in the Peace Corps, and I was sent to Nepal.

One of the many things I learned in Nepal was the difference between crisis intervention and wellness. I’m glad we have people who know how to intervene medically in case of injury, for example, but I learned that avoiding disease, avoiding crisis by staying well and practicing wellness, which includes getting chiropractic care, is a much healthier way to live.

I studied for my Master in Science degree, and was on staff at several universities before my wife Kathleen and I decided to leave Higher Education and go into private practice. I graduated with my Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City, Missouri.

On a Personal Note…

I have always enjoyed nature and being outdoors. I enjoy hiking, backpacking and just being in mountain wilderness. I have had the opportunity to backpack in mountains all over the world, including the Mount Everest area of Nepal. None give me quite the sense of being “home” as our Rocky Mountains, though. It is such a privilege to live in a place so beautiful.

I have to admit that I didn’t become a wellness patient early enough in life. I am one now, though! I see my chiropractor once a week, eat well, exercise at least three times a week, and sometimes get enough rest. (I’m not good at sitting still.)

My family gets regular chiropractic care, too. Our daughter rarely even catches a cold, and has never been on antibiotics. She has only had one ear infection in her entire life, and that resolved well with the same natural chiropractic care I provide for my other patients.

We do keep some over-the-counter pain relievers in our first aid kit at home, and I’m thankful to have them. I’m even more grateful, however, for not needing them. I long ago lost count of how many bottles of expired Tylenol I have thrown away.
